The city and the union representing public library workers continued to negotiate late Sunday as a midnight strike deadline approached.

With no deal in sight, 2,000 city library workers are in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on May 2.

There were no updates on the negotiations late Sunday. However earlier in the day, CUPE Local 4948 urged the city to table what it called a fair offer for library workers.

Mayor John Tory issued a statement Sunday evening urging the Toronto library Board and the workers to try and reach an agreement so that libraries can stay open.

“As the bargaining teams for the Toronto Public Library Board and CUPE 4948 continue to negotiate, I encourage both parties to do their best to reach an agreement before tonight’s strike deadline,” Tory said in a statement.

Negotiations between the union and the library board have been ongoing since February.

The main sticking points are cuts to staff funding and job security for part-time workers.
