Several homes in the Upper Beaches were evacuated Tuesday morning after construction crews hit a major gas line.

Crews struck the line while working near Gerrard Street East and Wayland Avenue at around 9:30 a.m.

Toronto police say the “large leak” forced the evacuation of some nearby houses.

Police closed Gerrard Street East in both directions between Wayland and Malvern avenues for more than four hours while crews worked to repair the leak.

Roads reopened shortly before 2 p.m.

No injuries have been reported.
