September snow flurries fell in northwestern Ontario on Wednesday, a week before the first day of fall.

Though the official start to fall is Tuesday, a mix of rain and snow fell in the area surrounding Geraldton, Ont., a community approximately 260 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.

Snow was also reported in South Porcupine, Ont., a neighbourhood in Timmins, and as far south as Chapleau, Ont.

Less than five centimetres was recorded in Geraldton, according to the Weather Network, but it was enough to cover roads and vehicles with a dusting of heavy, wet flakes.

An Arctic cold front caused temperatures to drop to near or below the freezing mark in northwestern Ontario, and though the mercury is expected to rise through the day, temperatures will likely drop below freezing again Wednesday night.

Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for Geraldton-Manitouwadge-Hornepayne, Kapuskasing-Hearst, Lake Nipigon-Wabakimi and Timmins-Cochrane.
