After an unlikely encounter led him into a stranger’s vehicle, British comedian Ricky Gervais took to Twitter to thank the Toronto woman who gave him a ride in the city over the weekend.

Gervais posted a photo of Leuty Lifeguard Station in the Beaches area to his Twitter and Facebook pages on Saturday, with the caption: "Exploring the beaches of Lake Ontario. What a beautiful place to live. #Toronto"

When Toronto resident and fan of Gervais Kara Stahl saw the photo, she immediately recognized the landmark and set off to find the star.

She drove to the area and found Gervais, who was travelling with his partner, writer Jane Fallon. She snapped a photo with Gervais, then noticed they were trying to hail a cab.

Stahl offered the pair a ride, which they agreed to, and she posted a photo to Facebook of Gervais and Fallon smiling from the back of her car.

After the encounter, Stahl tweeted to Fallon:

"An honour to have you and @rickygervais in my car today," Stahl wrote

"Unbelievable random act of kindness! Thank you @dixichkn for giving us a ride when we couldn't find a taxi," Fallon wrote back. Gervais retweeted the exchange, thanking her for the ride.

"Canadian hospitality at its best," he posted.

Gervais is visiting Toronto to film a movie called "Special Correspondents." He posted on Facebook that filming starts in two weeks, calling it his "most ambitious project yet."
