Fire crews have extinguished a blaze after residents of the home were forced to jump from the second floor to escape.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 39 Kensington Ave., a townhouse north of Dundas Street, at approximately 6 a.m., officials said.

Toronto Fire Capt. Mike Strapko told reporters on scene that flames and smoke were seen pouring from the building's second storey. There was also thick black smoke coming from the top of the three-storey home.

At one point, people who were trapped in the building were forced to jump out of a second-storey window, Strapko said. There were earlier reports that an elderly couple was trapped inside, but Strapko said he believed everyone got out safely.

A dozen fire trucks and 45 firefighters were called to put out the blaze. It is not yet known what caused the fire, but the Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.

Neighbours told reporters on scene that they believed the fire started on the third floor of the home. Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw said the fire burned out a stairwell between the second and third floor.

Shaw said a firefighter suffered minor injuries while inside the home, when a floor collapsed under his weight. Paramedics said no one needed to be taken to hospital.
