TORONTO -- A 47-year-old Windsor man is dead after police say he was struck by two vehicles in a community north of Toronto.

York Regional Police say the pedestrian was struck and thrown by a car on Highway 11 in East Gwillimbury just before 6 a.m. Thursday and was then struck by a pickup truck coming from the other direction.

The man, whose name has not been released, died on the scene. Police say his family has been notified.

The drivers of the vehicles involved were not injured.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are appealing to any witnesses to come forward.

The death is the latest in a spate of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries in the Toronto area in recent days.

A 81-year-old man who was struck by a turning SUV in Toronto's west end (near Islington Avenue and Steeles Avenue West) as he crossed the street Wednesday died of his injuries in hospital.

Also on Wednesday, a 61-year-old woman died after being hit by a tractor trailer in Toronto's northeast end (at Markham Road and Finch Avenue). Police say the woman was in the area of the intersection when she was hit by the truck as it made a right turn (onto Markham Road).

And a 25-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries in another incident Wednesday in the city's north end (on Finch Avenue east of Don Mills Road).

Police say two vehicles collided in an intersection and one of them struck the woman as she was crossing the street. Investigators say one of the drivers remained on the scene but the other driver fled on foot.
