Reports say Toronto city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is allegedly under a criminal investigation for accepting an $80,000 gift from a fundraiser that was held last year in May.

Lawyers hired by the city referred the matter to police.

"I can advise that the Stockwoods Law Firm has been retained to provide advice with respect to this matter. The matter has been referred to the police for such action as the police deem appropriate," a spokesperson for the city told CP24 in an email.

Mammoliti responded to the accusations in an email, saying he had not been aware of any outside lawyer.

Tickets for the event, which was held on May 22, 2013, were sold at $500 per plate, or $5,000 for a table of 10, and more than 200 people attended, including lobbyists, companies doing business with the city, family members and staff.

Last June, Integrity Commissioner Janet Leiper found that the Ward 7 councillor had breached the municipal code of conduct by accepting an $80,000 gift at the fundraising dinner and dance.

In July, council voted to cut Mammoliti's pay for 3 months. Toronto city councillors earn $8,678.95 per month.
