A 36-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle in Mississauga that subsequently fled the scene.

Police believe the man was crossing westbound on Dixie Road, near Rathburn Road, at around 11 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle.

Peel Regional Police Const. Bancroft Wright said the victim was dragged a "short distance" after the collision.

The victim was initially described as being in serious condition but police later confirmed that he died at the scene.

Wright said investigators are still trying to gather information from witnesses before providing a detailed description of the vehicle believed to be involved in the crash.

“We have different statements from witnesses indicating that there was either a truck or SUV that was involved,” he said. “Whether or not the individual knew that they struck the victim is yet to be known and investigators are, of course, in the process of gathering those details.”

Wright said it’s too early to say whether the victim was crossing on a green light or what direction the vehicle was travelling in prior to the crash.

“That’s part of the investigation,” he said. “We don’t know if they were travelling northbound on Dixie or whether or not the vehicle was turning from the side of the plaza.”

Investigators will canvass the area for surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses and vehicles in hopes that the incident was caught on camera.

They are also working on notifying the victim’s next of kin before releasing his identity.

Dixie Road has been closed in the area while police investigate.
