The Maple Leaf Gardens building has been evacuated following reports of a strong solvent odour Wednesday night.

Toronto Fire Services (TFS) say they received reports about the odour inside the building, located in the Carlton and Church Streets area, shortly before 7:45 p.m.

The building, which contains a Loblaws and the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, has since been evacuated.

District Fire Chief Mike Swift said they believe the cause of the odour was an irritant that was sprayed in the building.

"The police are looking at surveillance video to see if there was anything unusual that happened," he said Wednesday night.

Officials say a woman was taken to hospital as a precaution, and another was treated at the scene.

The Mattamy Athletic Centre is expected to remain closed for the rest of the night.
