A man in his 20s is facing charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl on a transit bus in Markham.

York Regional Police said the assault occurred on Jan. 13 at approximately 5:45 p.m., on a bus in the area of Highway 7 and Town Centre Boulevard.

In a statement, police said a man tried to make conversation with a 14-year-old girl seated across from him on the bus. He then moved to sit next to her and began commenting on her appearance, police said.

"The man then grabbed some of the girl's personal belongings and as she tried to get them back the man touched her in a sexual manner," police said in a statement Friday.

The girl then got off the bus, and reported the incident to police.

Following an investigation, a 27-year-old was arrested and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and criminal harassment.
