A heat alert has been issued for Toronto and other parts of the GTA as hot weather is expected to move through the region.

The daytime high is expected to reach 31 C on Saturday and could feel like 37 C with humidity.

Environment Canada says temperatures are expected to remain at around 30 C until Monday. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to 20 C.

The weather agency advises people who are exposed to the heat to drink plenty of liquids, take cool showers or baths, and go to air-conditioned places when possible. Wearing loose, light-coloured clothing and avoiding direct sunlight can also help prevent heat-related illness.

Extreme heat can put everyone at risk, but health risks are greatest for older adults, young children and people with chronic illnesses.

The areas included in the heat warning are:

  • City of Toronto
  • Niagara
  • City of Hamilton
  • Burlington – Oakville
  • Halton Hills – Milton
  • Mississauga – Brampton
