The Mayor of Hamilton was sent to hospital over the weekend to be treated for burns after a fire involving his clothes dryer.

Fred Eisenberger was treated for possible smoke inhalation and had his hand bandaged at Hamilton General Hospital after a fire broke out at his home around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Firefighters had to deal with “a significant amount of smoke” during the incident, according to a release from The City of Hamilton.

The Mayor returned to the hospital on Sunday to have his bandage changed, and will visit the burn unit on Monday for further evaluation.

"I want to offer my sincere thanks to the Hamilton Fire Department, Paramedics and Hamilton Police Service for their response and good care for us and our home and hospital staff who provided excellent treatment," he said.

The mayor’s family, including his wife Diane, were not injured.

Eisenberger was elected mayor in October. He previously served as the city’s leader from 2006 to 2010.
