The gas is back on for all but three customers affected by a gas leak on Friday afternoon that prompted the evacuation of an east-end neighbourhood and a major power outage in the area.

Enbridge Gas Distribution said Saturday morning they had isolated a damaged section of the main gas line overnight and that employees were going door-to-door to relight customers’ pilot lights.

“Next week we will work to replace the damaged section of the main in conjunction with the TTC and the city,” an Enbridge spokesperson added.

Police had ordered the evacuation after a construction crew hit a gas line in the Kingston Road and Victoria Park Avenue around noonFriday, causing the leak.

The leak was capped shortly before 5 p.m., and customers were allowed to return to their homes on foot soon after.

Police asked residents to not light fires or use barbecues until 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Toronto Hydro temporarily cut the power Friday afternoon to approximately 4,500 customers as a safety precaution. It was back on by 7:45 p.m.

TTC streetcars and busses had to divert as a result of the incident, but by Saturday afternoon, there were no TTC service alerts in the area.
