A female pedestrian believed to be in her 70s is fighting for her life in hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the financial district.

Police were called to the scene near Bay and Adelaide streets at around noon on Thursday.

“The pedestrian, a woman, suffered serious injuries. She was taken to hospital. About an hour and a half later, it was determined that those injuries were life-threatening,” Const. Clint Stibbe said.

The area remained closed for nearly four hours as police completed a full reconstruction of the accident.

“What we have to look at now is if the driver had priority…and what were their actions that led up to this collision,” Stibbe said.

Those who work nearby said they see dangerous situations all the time.

“Drivers are pretty cautious, more cautious than people. People think they can just run across,” said a woman who works in the area.

Hours after the crash, the vehicle was moved off of the woman’s purse, which was pinned to the ground under one of its tires, so police could identify the victim.

“We did already receive video from the area but we are asking further help from witnesses,” Stibbe said.
