With temperatures expected to dip as low as -35 C over the weekend, Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for Toronto and the GTA.

The national weather agency said a cold front will pass through the Toronto region on Friday night, leaving “very cold” temperatures and winds in its wake.

It is estimated that wind chill values will be between -30 C and -35 C. Conditions are expected to improve slightly on Saturday afternoon, but then fall below -30 C in the evening.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when cold temperatures or the wind chill creates an “elevated risk” to health, including frostbite and hypothermia.

On Thursday, the City of Toronto declared an extreme cold weather alert as temperatures dipped to -25 C with the wind chill.

Residents are being asked to check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours to ensure they are not experiencing difficulties related to the weather.

Members of the public are being encouraged to dress appropriately for the cold weather by wearing layers of clothing and warm socks, gloves, hats and a scarf.
