A 31-year-old man who is developmentally delayed was assaulted while riding a TTC subway train over the weekend, Toronto police say.

Officers responded to a call that came in around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday for reports of an altercation taking place on a subway train.

According to investigators, Brian Dutkoski was travelling eastbound on the subway when some kind of exchange between him and a suspect took place.

The victim was then punched and kicked as the subway stopped at Pape Station, police said.

Dutkoski told CTV News Toronto that he was on his way back from a friend’s birthday party at the time.

“A guy came up to me and just punched me once and I looked up,” he said.

The man asked Dutkoski if he said anything to him, to which Dutkoski said no.

“Then he punched me again,” he said.

The suspect then allegedly attempted to kick the victim. In an attempt to shield himself from the attack Dutkoski put up his arms subsequently fracturing one of his forearms.

Dutkoski said he does not know what spurred this action.

“I was minding my own business, looking at my phone, listening to music,” he said.

After the altercation, the suspect exited the train at Pape Station and Dutkoski remained on board.

Police said TTC special constables were called to the scene and notified police shortly after.

The suspect has been described as a five-foot-nine to six-foot white male in his 20’s. At the time, he had a goatee and was wearing a black jacket with jeans and black sneakers.

The investigation is ongoing as police have asked the TTC to hand over video surveillance footage of the alleged incident.
