A man who was trapped under an approximately 3,000-kilogram beam at a subway construction site has been rescued and transported to hospital in serious condition.

Toronto EMS says a man in his mid 20s was trapped more than 9 metres down a hole and a crane was used to rescue him. The incident happened shortly after 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the Keele Street and Finch Avenue West area, near York University.

EMS says the beam crushed the construction worker's torso. He was lifted out of the hole shortly after 8:00 a.m.
