Toronto firefighters say they’ve recovered a body after knocking down a two-alarm fire that engulfed a home in Scarborough.

Fire crews responded to calls about a fire at 5 Pennybrook Lane, in the Sheppard Avenue East and Markham Road area, at 5:20 p.m. on Monday.

“When our first crews arrived, flames were coming out of the second-floor window,” Toronto Fire Services Division Commander Bob O’Hallaran said. “During a search, they found a body in one of the bedrooms.”

Several other people were in the house at the time of the fire, but made it out safely, he said.

Details surrounding the identity of the victim have not yet been released, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
