A child is safe after an attempted abduction at an elementary school in Hamilton, Ont. on Thursday.

A kindergarten student was playing in the school's fenced-in playground when he was taken by an unknown man, shortly after noon.

Hamilton police said the man took the boy and started walking away from Earl Kitchener Elementary School, at 300 Dundurn St. S., near Aberdeen Avenue, but was stopped by a woman in the area approximately 200 metres from the school.

The stranger noticed that the child was crying, and intervened, Hamilton police said. The suspect fled without incident, and the boy was brought back to school. He was shaken, but unharmed.

Police were called and searched the surrounding area with the help of a canine unit, but they have not arrested a suspect. As a precaution, the school asked parents to pick up their children at the end of the day. Students who normally took buses had to be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Police are still looking for the man, described as white, 5-foot-7 and 160 pounds. He has a slight build, sculpted cheek bones, pointy nose and wavy, chin-length hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a grey T-shirt.

He was last seen walking southbound on MacDonald Avenue from Homewood Avenue.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is asked to call 911.
