It’s Wednesday and CTV News has gathered the day’s top stories. Here are the five things you need to know: The federal government has admitted it won't meet its deadline on bringing in 25,000 Syrian refugees by New Year's day; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is due to meet British PM David Cameron for the first time; a self-proclaimed "climate crusader" is heading to Paris; a Chicago police officer has been charged with murder in the shooting of a teen; and the UN says 2015 is the hottest year on record.

And for "Dream Big Wednesday," a look at five mountains where you can ski in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon.

1. Deadline blown: The government admitted it will not meet its self-imposed deadline and bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by New Year’s Day. Instead, Canada will admit 25,000 by the end of February. The Refugees Minister also revealed the 25,000 will be on top of at least 10,000 who are being privately-sponsored, meaning the Liberals will have resettled 35,000 by the end of 2016… if all goes as planned.

2. Trip abroad: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in the United Kingdom this morning for his first meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron and with Queen Elizabeth II. Trudeau actually met the monarch when he was a young child in the 1970s.

3. Climate kid heads to Paris: Flying to Paris from Vancouver isn’t cheap, but an 11-year-old girl was so determined to witness the United Nations Climate Change Conference in person that she raised $2,000 for a plane ticket by babysitting and selling dog biscuits.

4. Cop accused of murder: A white Chicago police officer has been charged with murder after he shot a black teenage suspect 16 times. As officials released cruiser dash-cam video showing the knife-wielding teen being gunned down, they urged protesters to remain calm.

5. Hot, hot, hot: 2015 is officially the hottest year on record. Officials issued the proclamation early having forecast that weather for the rest of the year is unlikely cool down enough to not set a record.

And one more thing for "Dream Big Wednesday:" Why should the sea and mountains be incompatible when you can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon? There are several places in the world where you can do both and put an end to this old dilemma.
