Grassy Narrows hunger strike

Former Grassy Narrows Chief Steven Fobister Sr. will go on a hunger strike at Queen's Park at 10 a.m. today. Fobister is demanding justice for the members of a northern Ontario First Nation who suffer from mercury poisoning.

The First Nation group says according to an unreleased government report, the federal and provincial governments have known about the poisoning for years, but failed to provide adequate compensation or health care. Water in the Grassy Narrows area has been contaminated with mercury since a local paper mill dumped tonnes of toxins into the system between 1962 and 1970.

Funeral service for teen struck by GO Train

A funeral service will be held today for Tyler Bailey, the 17-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a GO Train last week. Police said Bailey was hanging out with his friends under the Dundas Street West bridge, near Sorauren Avenue, when the accident happened. Tuesday's service will be held at St. Clare's Catholic Church at 10 a.m.

If you're planning on driving in the Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street area today, give yourself some extra time as the intersection will remain closed until Aug. 11 for TTC construction.
