An aggressive altercation between police and a screaming crowd in Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday night was caught on camera as thousands were out for Nuit Blanche.

A screaming crowd taunted Toronto police officers who can be seen in the video forming a line from the hostile crowd. The video shows the officers slowly moving backwards through glass doors that lead to an underground parking lot.

The crowd is seen dispersing after the police officers retreat behind the glass doors.

Nuit Blanche attracted thousands of people to the downtown core Saturday night, but there is no indication of a connection between that all-night event and the crowd that confronted police at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Shota Abaishvili was out with friends Saturday night, when he says he came across people “arguing with police.”

“I had no idea what was happening,” Abaishvili said.

Abaishvili said he was walking to the underground parking lot at Yonge-Dundas Square when he noticed the dispute and “suddenly started to record video.”

“People started throwing bottles at police,” Abaishvili said.

Abaishvili says that Toronto police officers were “acting professionally” as they were confronted by the group.

Witnesses tell CTV the tension began when police tried to disperse a large crowd gathered in Yonge-Dundas Square.

Toronto police say there were no arrests as a result of the incident.

In another video posted online Saturday night, people are seen ripping tiles from the ceiling at the Dundas Subway Station.

In a statement to CTV News, the TTC says they are aware of the incident and are investigating.

“Vandalism or property damage is investigated thoroughly by the TTC and police when it occurs. We make use of any available CCTV as part of an investigation and prosecute perpetrators to the full extent of the law," said the TTC’s Brad Ross.
