A park in Mississauga named after a deceased building developer will have its name adjusted so it won’t be confused with his 29-year-old grandson who was recently sentenced for a drunk driving crash that killed four people.

The Marco Muzzo Memorial Woods and Park in Erin Mills was dedicated to Marco Muzzo Sr. in 2007.

The elder Muzzo was the chairman of a string of construction and contracting firms that were responsible for various developments in the city, including some of the community surrounding the park and other parks in the area.

His grandson, a King City resident by the same name, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday in connection to an impaired driving crash in Vaughan that killed three young children and their grandfather in Sept. 2015.

A resolution was passed by councilors on Wednesday to change the name of the park to avoid confusion about who the park was named after.

“The community has expressed concern that there is a park in the City of Mississauga Ward 10 named Marco Muzzo Woods and Park,” a resolution by the Council of the City of Mississauga reads. “The potential for confusion with the duplication of names of these two individuals can be addressed by renaming the park.”

Councillors also opted to waive the usual 30-day waiting period, which allows time to notify the community of the change.

This means the name change will take effect immediately, as Marco Muzzo Senior Memorial Woods and Park.
