Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man who was under arrest "launched" himself out of a moving police cruiser.

Police say the suspect was arrested in Mississauga on a number of theft charges. He was taken into police custody in the Elmcreek Road and Dundas Street West area at approximately 12:40 p.m. Thursday.

While he was being transported to 12 Division, the 25-year-old somehow jumped out of the police cruiser in the Mavis Road and Central Parkway area.

"The male party somehow launched himself out of the vehicle and landed here on the roadway," Peel Regional Police Const. George Tudos said.

Police say the man suffered cuts from going through the cruiser's window, and some abrasions from hitting the road. He was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Tudos said the suspect may face additional charges.

The Special Investigations Unit has assigned three officers and two forensic investigators to probe the incident.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
