A man has been charged with second-degree murder after a woman was found dead in a Brampton home on Sunday.
Peel Regional Police Const. Fiona Thivierge said officers received a call at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday about a disturbance at a residence on Nanwood Drive.
Officers arrived at the scene to find a deceased woman inside the home. The woman, believed to be in her mid- to late-50s, has not yet been identified.
Richard Pereira, 36, of Brampton, was taken into custody and later charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Sunday.
Police did not identify the relationship between the woman who died and the accused. Neighbours said man in his 30s and his mother lived in the home.
Neighbour Kevin Maxwell described hearing two “booms” before police came “flying up the street.”
"It sounded like a car backfiring twice,” Maxwell told CTV Toronto.
Maxwell and other neighbours recalled seeing police at the house as recently as about two weeks ago.
Thivierge confirmed police had been to the house before “for a number of different types of calls.”
Thivierge said Peel police have dispatched several teams to canvass the area and conduct interviews.
A cause of death has not yet been determined, but police said the victim displayed obvious signs of trauma.
Investigators are asking that anyone who has any information about the case to contact Peel Regional Police.
