A 26-year-old man was rescued early Monday morning after he fell more than 9 metres down the embankment of the Niagara Gorge and was stuck on a ledge.

Police were called to the gorge, located in the Hiram Street and Niagara River Parkway area, at approximately 5 a.m. Members of the Niagara Falls Fire Department rescued the Massachusetts man using a rope haul system. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Greater Niagara General Hospital for treatment.

Police said the man and his friends had been warned earlier about being over the gorge's retaining wall. They say alcohol was a factor in the incident.

The man, who has not been identified, has been charged under the Niagara Parks Act.
