A man in his 40s has died following a single-vehicle collision in Mississauga early Thursday morning.

He was travelling east along Eglinton Avenue near Tomken Road when the vehicle he was in crashed into a pole, shortly after midnight.

Peel Regional Police said the 46-year-old man was travelling at approximately 190 km/h at the time of the crash.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, hitting a hydro pole before coming to rest in a nearby ditch. The force of the collision split the vehicle in half, Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said.

Debris from the crash covered a 700-metre stretch of road, she said.

The driver was pronounced dead on scene, but police have yet to publicly confirm his identity.

Fitzpatrick said that there was no evidence to suggest that another vehicle had been involved in the crash.

"We don't have anything at this point to indicate that there was anything other than speed that is believed to be a factor," she told reporters on scene.

She said that police believe the man may have had a dog with him in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officers have searched the area, but have not located the Sheltie.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to come forward to speak with police.
