A man who was killed in a shooting at a plaza in Vaughan on Sunday afternoon was a suspect in a multi-million dollar drug bust last year.

Ritesh Thakur, 41, was one of four people arrested by Toronto police on May 6, 2013 after they seized cocaine, crystal meth and liquid gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) with an estimated street value of $6.5-million.

Thakur, 33-year-old Philipos Kollaros, 29-year-old Gursharan Singh and 36-year-old Dimitri Alexiou all faced trafficking and possession charges. Thakur was due to appear in court this month.

York Regional Police and EMS found Thakur with multiple gunshot wounds outside of a HomeSense store in a plaza at Colossus Drive and Weston Road when they were called to the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene, then transported him to Sunnybrook hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police are looking for a silver, four-door, newer model Honda Civic with tinted windows, that witnesses saw leaving the area soon after the shooting.

They said there were a number of people shopping at the time of the shooting, and ask any witnesses to contact York Regional Police's homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865 or email homicide@yrp.ca.

While the murder is the second daytime shooting in the Woodbridge area in a week, police said there’s no connection between the incidents. Carmine Verducci, a man with links to an Italian mob, was shot to death on April 24 in front of a cafe just blocks from the scene of Sunday's shooting.

"I can confirm to you that the two shootings are not related to each other," said Const. Andy Pattenden of the York Regional Police.

However, both victims are believed to have been targeted.
