WAINFLEET, Ont. - Police say a 33-year-old man has been electrocuted while trying to steal copper wire in Wainfleet, Ont.

Investigators say the man died shortly before midnight Tuesday at a transformer in the community southwest of Welland.

Police say two other men who were with the victim called for help.

The other two men are facing theft charges.

Incidents of copper theft are usually tied to the metal's fluctuating value.

In April, the theft of about 500 metres of copper cable in the Edmonton area cut phone service to hundreds of customers for several hours.
