TORONTO -- A 19-year-old man has died in hospital after a downtown Toronto shooting that is under investigation by the province's police watchdog.

Police say the Naveed Shahnawaz, of Brampton, died in hospital early this morning after being shot around 3 a.m. Sunday outside the Muzik night club at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds.

The Special Investigations Unit says officers responding to gunshots being fired in an altercation in the club's parking lot shot at a Honda Accord as it left the area.

It says Shahnawaz was hit in the chest and arm during the incident, while an 18-year-old in the vehicle was shot in the arm.

Three Toronto men were charged Monday in connection with the shooting, while the force's homicide squad today began investigating the incident.

Eighteen-year-old Tony Dinh is charged with two counts of attempted murder with a firearm, assault with a weapon and other charges, while 19-year-old Jonathan Lau faces charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Hoan Nguyen, 26, has been charged with one count of assault.

Police say an autopsy of Shahnawaz will be scheduled.

Dinh is set to appear in court next Thursday.
