The Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation into the death of a construction worker who died after he became trapped in a deep trench that had collapsed at a west-end construction site.

The incident happened in residential area in the Eglinton Avenue West and Caledonia Road. A witness told CTV Toronto that they had heard a loud smashing sound at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Shortly after, the witness said they saw construction workers rushing to the trench to try to free the man. The hole was more than two metres deep.

Officials say heavy equipment was used to remove the dirt so that emergency crews could safely recover the body of the worker.

A coworker of the victim told CTV Toronto that he was in his 30s and was a father of two.
