Toronto police say a 23-year-old man is facing charges in connection with a fatal crash near the city’s St. James Town neighbourhood on Monday night.
It happened shortly before 10 p.m. near Bloor and Parliament streets.
According to police, the driver of a Honda Civic was heading eastbound on Bloor Street near Parliament Street when he left the roadway while approaching a curve.
Police say the driver struck a pole and the start of a bridge wall.
A 25-year-old male passenger was killed in the collision and a 20-year-old female passenger was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.
A third passenger, a 20-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries following the crash.
The 23-year-old driver, identified as Toronto resident Galeeb Abau-Jabeen, is facing multiple charges, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
Abau-Jabeen appeared at the College Park courthouse today and will remain in custody until his next court date on Dec. 1.
He was ordered not to have any contact with the surviving passengers, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban.
“I can tell you he was licenced, however, he was in a novice class of licence. This would preclude any sort of impairment by that driver for any reason,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 at the scene Tuesday.
“These types of actions are decisions that drivers make or anyone makes to consume these types of substances and get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. This wasn’t a mistake, this was a conscious decision.”
Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
