PICKERING, Ont. -- A Peterborough-area man has turned himself in to police after an alleged assault on a hockey fan at a weekend game in Pickering, east of Toronto.

Police say officers went to the arena around 7 p.m. last Saturday after reports of a large fight in the stands between fans of two minor midget hockey teams.

Witnesses told police that as many as 20 fans were involved in an altercation during a game at Don Beer Arena.

It's alleged that at one point, the suspect confronted a 17-year-old Ajax youth about his cheering and jeering, then grabbed and punched him.

Police say the teenaged victim attempted to fight back but was pushed against the glass and punched repeatedly in the head.

Matthew Madgett, 23, of Cavan, has been charged with assault.
