Toronto police have arrested and charged a man they say visited at least five Toronto schools under the guise of a special needs teacher.

Police say the man claimed to be a certified teacher and worked as a special needs assistant and educational assistant at several local schools including H. A. Halbert Junior Public School, Ionview Public School, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, Inglewood Heights Junior Public School, and Centennial Road Junior Public School.

Investigators say the man attended the schools between April 1 and June 5 but was never employed by the Toronto District School Board.

TDSB says that while this is the first time such an incident has occurred within the board, officials are reviewing school safety procedures in light of the breach.

“Among the changes potentially is, should photo ID be required, a government-issued photo ID (at schools),” TDSB Spokesperson Ryan Bird told CTV Toronto.

Police are concerned the suspect may have visited more schools and are asking parents and students who may recognize the suspect to come forward with information.
