Police have identified the man who died in a stabbing in downtown Toronto Saturday and say a suspect is in custody.

Police and paramedics were called to an apartment building at 330 Jarvis St. just after 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

They performed first aid and a man who was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

The man has been identified as Brent Gartner, 51, of Toronto.

Soon after the first stabbing, police say they were called to another incident nearby that required first aid.

“Investigators have now identified this man as the suspect in the stabbing,” police said Sunday afternoon.

“He is police custody,” they added.

Paramedics said on Saturday night that they responded to two stabbings in the Carlton Street and Jarvis Area, including the fatal stabbing at 330 Jarvis Street.

At the second scene, near Church and Carlton streets, they found a man, 66, with a slash on his arm that they say involved a Samurai sword. They said he suffered a large slash wound on the arm and is in hospital with critical injuries.
