A 25-year-old man has died after being getting shocked by electrical wires at a Vaughan work site.

The worker was excavating land shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, in the area of Highway 7 and Dufferin Street.

A representative of PowerStream said he was using a machine to dig through the ground, when the machine made contact with one of the company's hydro lines.

“PowerStream and its employees are deeply saddened by this loss of life, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, co-workers and friends at this most difficult time,” Vaughan Mayor and PowerStream chair Maurizio Bevilacqua and company CEO Brian Bentz said in a statement released Tuesday.

The company said the man worked for one of Powerstream’s contractors, PGC Services.

York Regional Police said the worker succumbed to his injuries in hospital. He has not been publicly identified.

Highway 7 was closed from Langstaff Road to Dufferin Street. Part of the highway has since reopened but police continue to investigate.
