WHITBY, Ont. - Ontario's governing Liberals have picked a local municipal councillor to try to steal a seat from the Progressive Conservatives in an upcoming byelection.

Elizabeth Roy was picked to run in Whitby-Oshawa in a nomination meeting held Thursday night in the riding.

Roy is a health care professional who has also been a school board trustee.

The riding was held by high-profile Tory Christine Elliott, who unsuccessfully ran for the party's leadership this year and lost to Patrick Brown.

She announced in August that she was leaving provincial politics.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has not set a date for the byelection.
