KITCHENER, Ont. -- Kitchener is hoping it has set a new record for the world's longest picnic table.

City councillor Berry Vrbanovic says that around 5,000 people came out to eat their lunches on picnic tables set up in a long line through the city's downtown.

He says the tables stretched for 2,282 metres -- unofficially breaking the record set in Germany three years ago by roughly 300 metres.

He expects it will take about five weeks for officials with Guinness World Records to confirm Kitchener's top spot.
