Broadway musical Kinky Boots premiered at the Royal Alexandria Theatre on Sunday, adding to this weekend’s celebrations of acceptance and equality.

Based on true events, Kinky Boots tells the story of a shoemaker’s son who is having difficulty living up to his father’s legacy after inheriting his shoe factory. The young man forms an unlikely relationship with a drag queen who is looking for a pair of thigh-high red boots, and the two find great success in the fashion industry.

The musical was written by 1980s pop icon Cyndi Lauper.

Lauper has been in Toronto since Wednesday taking part in the Pride festivities.

The show’s celebration of inclusion and equality resonates perfectly with this weekend’s Pride festivities, Lauper said.

“You couldn’t ask for a better Pride,” said Lauper, who is well known LGBTQ activist. “We’ve worked so hard for equality.”

Kinky Boots is the winner of 6 Broadway Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.

The show will be on in Toronto until September.
