Police are warning residents of Kingston, Ont. and nearby areas to be on the lookout for a van with an "animal control" sign attached to it.

The suspicious van was reported on Monday by a homeowner living on Woodburn Road. The homeowner told police the van had an "animal control" sign attached to it, but that the sign seemed "unprofessional."

The woman told officers she'd seen social media posts from the Quinte, Belleville, Ottawa and Pembroke areas. Those who posted about the van said they were concerned its drivers may be looking for pets, possibly show dogs, to steal from owners "under the guise of being an official agency," police said in a statement.

Police reached out to the city's animal control department and the Kingston Humane Society, and found that neither organization uses a van fitting the homeowner's description.

Though no pet thefts have been connected to the van, police are advising those in the Kingston area to report any sightings of the van. Witnesses are asked to contact police at 613-549-4660 to report its location and last known direction.

"Without putting one's self at risk it would assist the police investigation if a licence plate or description of any occupants is obtained," officers wrote.
