A 40-year-old man is facing a total of 16 charges in connection with a fire that police believe was deliberately set earlier this month.

A fire started on a deck of a home on Oxford Street, near Dundas Street and Spadina Avenue, at approximately 1 a.m. on Dec. 1.

More than 100 firefighters and 20 trucks were called to the neighbourhood, as the fire spread to nearby homes. Firefighters previously estimated the damage to the homes, located at 10, 12, 14 and 16 Oxford St., at approximately $1 million.

No residents were injured, but five cats died in the fire on Oxford.

Last week, police said that a garage fire in the area may also have been related. Police said a man matching the suspect's description was seen entering a garage at 214 Augusta Ave. on Monday, Nov. 24, at approximately 10 p.m. The man allegedly set fire to an item or items in the garage then fled the scene.

Police released surveillance video of a man believed to be a suspect on Friday. On Tuesday, they announced that Sean Gellvear, 40, had been arrested.

Gellvear has been charged with five counts of mischief over $5,000, four counts of mischief endangering life, and four counts of arson having a disregard for human life.

He's also been charged with two counts of failure to comply with probation and one count of "prowl by night."
