One of the victims of Thursday's dinner-time shooting that sent five people to hospital says he was outside his home with his friends and family when a dozen shots were fired in their direction.

The man, who doesn't want to be identified, says he was hosting a barbecue Thursday evening in the area of Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue when he says "some guys" started firing their guns shortly before 6 p.m. The shooting happened across the street from a public school and near a  playground.

"(It) was just craziness – all crazy," he told CTV Toronto on Friday. "It happened so fast."

The 36-year-old man says his sister had just gone inside with her one-year-old child when the shots rang out. The man was shot in the leg, but is expected to make a full recovery.

"I went inside and then I feel my leg give away so I knew I got hit," he said. "I'm in lots of pain right now."

The man was rushed to hospital along with four other victims, including one who was without vital signs. He was later revived by paramedics.

Shortly after the shooting, police recovered four guns and arrested four men in their 20s in connection with the incident. They are each facing more than a dozen charges.

The suspects were arrested on Elmhurst Drive, near Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard. Police say one of the suspects was shot in an "interaction with police" during the arrest. The province's police watchdog has been called to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, some residents in the Jane-and-Finch neighbourhood say they are shaken by the shooting.

"I was scared because I was here, literally 10 minutes before it happened," Phoenix Panton-Sawyers said. "It could have been me."
