TORONTO - Israeli President Shimon Peres is getting an eyeful of Toronto's building boom as he meets with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty today.

McGuinty welcomed Peres at a downtown hotel and joked that the 160 cranes on the city's skyline are in the president's honour.

The 88-year-old Peres, twice prime minister of Israel, is in Canada for a five-day state visit.

The Nobel laureate will speak later today at a Canada-Israel research panel on brain research -- a topic he's known to be passionate about.

Peres was in Ottawa on Tuesday, where he spoke at Rideau Hall.

He also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Royal Society of Canada and the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Brain science will be the first area of collaboration.

Peres visits Montreal on Thursday.
