Nearly 300 flights at Toronto's Pearson International Airport have been cancelled due to a winter storm in the northeastern U.S.

A nor'easter is pounding a stretch from Maine to Virginia, and as far inland as Maryland. Some parts of the region are expected to be buried under as much as 60 centimetres of snow.

Environment Canada has also issued weather warnings as the storm system hits north of the border. Winter storm warnings are in effect from the east coast of Newfoundland to south-central Quebec.

The national weather agency warns of freezing rain, strong wind and blowing snow. Some areas can expect as many as 30 centimetres of snow to fall.

As a result of the storm system, hundreds of flights scheduled to arrive at or depart from Pearson are cancelled Tuesday.

As of 10 a.m., 133 arrivals (18.2 per cent) and 117 departures (15.9 per cent) had been cancelled at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

At Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, 12 departing flights and 24 arrivals had been cancelled Tuesday morning.

Most of the affected domestic flights were to or from Moncton and Halifax. The majority of affected international flights were to or from the New York area and Boston.

In Toronto, light snow began to fall early Tuesday morning. According to Environment Canada, the snow will taper off before noon. Residents can expect a high of -6 C.
