It may feel as warm as 40 C in the Toronto area as the city enters its second day of heat alerts.

Environment Canada forecasted a high of 32 C in Toronto on Monday, but warned that the humidity will make it feel as much as eight degrees warmer. The weather agency estimated the humidex will be between 37 and 40 C from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

As a result of the heat wave, Environment Canada has extended a heat warning issued Sunday.

In a statement issued Monday morning, Environment Canada said the warmth and humidity is expected to linger into the week. However, the temperature will dip slightly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with rain and thunderstorms in the forecast.

A similar statement was issued by the City of Toronto on Sunday and extended Monday by Medical Officer of Health David McKeown.

Both McKeown and Environment Canada are asking those in the city during the extreme heat to check up on those who are vulnerable to heat-related illness, including the elderly, young children and people which heart or respiratory illnesses.

Anyone spending time outside is advised to drink lots of water, go into air conditioned places, wear loose, light-coloured clothing and avoid the sun when possible.
