A man accused of impaired driving will reappear in court in January for a hearing on a Vaughan, Ont. crash that claimed the lives of three children and their grandfather.

Marco Muzzo, 29, is facing several charges in connection with the crash, including impaired driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Muzzo appeared in a court in Newmarket by video link on Thursday where the hearing was put over until Jan. 6, 2016. Muzzo was told he will be required to attend the next court session in person.

The brief appearance was attended by the parents of 9-year-old Daniel, 5-year-old Harrison (Harry) and 2-year-old Milagros (Milly) Neville-Lake, who died of injuries sustained in the Sept. 27 crash. The children's 65-year-old grandfather Gary Neville also died as a result of the collision.

As she left the courthouse, the children's mother told reporters the family is grateful that they won't have to be in court for their daughter's birthday, Dec. 23.

"The reason we're here is that children got hurt, children were killed," Jennifer Neville-Lake said.

"Please do not do that to others."

Neville-Lake also spoke about a Christmas tree that a stranger placed by the intersection where the crash occurred, as a memorial for the family members who died.

The tree, decorated with red and gold ornaments and a gold wire angel, stands near Kirby Road and Kipling Avenue.

"It was beautiful," Neville-Lake said.

She said the family noticed the tree at the crash site on Sunday, calling it an "amazing gesture."

The tree towers over toys, teddy bears, crosses and aging bouquets of flowers that have been left at the scene.

The children's parents left a small tree at their grave site last month, along with ornaments representing each child.
