A 19-year-old girl has died after being struck by a minivan with an impaired driver behind the wheel early Sunday morning in Hamilton, Ont.

Hamilton Police said a Pontiac Montana van was travelling east on Mud Street, just west of Fifth Road, at about 1 a.m. when it collided with the young female pedestrian.

The teen girl was transported to hospital where she later died.

Police said the driver was arrested on scene after showing signs of impairment. Officers took the driver to the police station for a breathalyzer test shortly after.

Nikolay Chshitko, a 19-year-old from Hamilton, has been charged with impaired driving causing death.

At the request of family members, the name of the female victim will not be released.

The incident marks Hamilton's 13th traffic fatality this year.
