A 61-year-old grandmother who was fatally shot in the city’s Riverdale neighbourhood on Saturday evening has been identified as Peggy Ann Smith.

Smith was found outside a townhouse near Dundas Street East and Munro Street shortly after 6:15 p.m.

Though a motive for the shooting is not known, police have said that the victim may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I find it hard to imagine that she was the intended target (of the shooting),” Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga told reporters Saturday evening.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting and police are continuing to look for two armed young males who were observed fleeing the scene on foot northbound towards Dundas Street.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Smith’s body today.
