A gas leak has closed off a portion of Kingston Road in the city's east end Monday morning.

Several homes near Sandown Avenue and an animal hospital have been evacuated. Residents and the pets are seeking shelter in a heated TTC bus.

Emergency crews were called after neighbours reported smelling a strong smell of natural gas and hearing a loud hissing sound. Crews promptly located a clipped gas main.

Police say the gas main may have been hit unintentionally by a snow plough.

Enbridge is on its way to the scene. Police say the matter should be resolved by late morning.
