Gardeners may want to hold off on planting this weekend.

Much of southern Ontario, including the Toronto area, is under a frost advisory from Environment Canada, with temperatures expected to plunge Friday night.

The statement issued Friday warns that widespread frost may be seen overnight as ground temperatures hover at or slightly below the freezing mark.

Areas close to the Great Lakes may be spared the frost.

The weather agency warned residents in the area to take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants overnight. Crops may also be damaged by the late-season frost.
